The church of Christ was established on the day of Pentecost shortly after the crucifixion of Jesus (this is found in Acts 2). On that day, the apostle Peter preached about the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. The crowd asked him what they could do to be saved and Peter's answer was "Repent and be baptized..." verse 41 those who received his word were baptized and added to their number, also in verse 47 we see that the Lord adds the saved to the church. This church, whose head is Christ, is the pattern which we strive to follow. Throughout the New Testament various churches were being established. One key characteristic among these churches were their autonomy. There was no heirarchy of greater churches and lesser churches, or leader churches and follower churches. There was no type of church government beyond the organization of each local church. Each church was individually subject to its head, Christ, and collectively referred to as "churches of Christ." These churches were commonly identified by where they met: the church which is at Cenchrea, the church which is in the house of Priscilla and Aquila, the church in the house of Nymphas, the church of Ephesus, etc...
Our worship service is simple, spiritual, and orderly (1 Corinthians 14:40). We strive to worship in spirit and in truth (John 4:23-24). We do not believe that frenzied emotionalism constitutes "spirit" and we do not believe that "truth" is found in any book other than the Bible.
When you visit with us you will be treated with respect and genuine kindness. If you are visiting with us on the Lord's Day (Sunday) you will observe that we eat the unleavened bread and drink the fruit of the vine in memory of the death of Christ on the cross (Matt 26:26-28). Like the Christians in the first century we engage in singing without musical instruments. We will sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs (Ephesians 5:19, Colossians 3: 16). You will also notice that one of the men of the congregation will lead our minds as we reverently pray to God (I Timothy 2:1-5). Also on the Lord's Day, a free-will collection will be taken from the members to support the work that occurs locally (I Corinthians 16:1-2). The Bible teaches that this is the only way that money should be collected and as a visitor you are not required to contribute.
Winding Road church of Christ:
Following the pattern of the church laid out in the New Testament, the Winding Road church of Christ continues the traditions set by the apostles by the authority of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Our mandate is to have "book, chapter, and verse" authority for anything we do in Christ's church and in our service to God; recognizing that we are not at liberty to customize our service to God in any way that He has not authorized.
